The Story

Botanica Obscura is about slowing down.

After a decade in the high-pressure world of news and tech, a career spanning Sydney to San Francisco, founder Diana Houseman-Pham reached a point where she simply needed to unplug.

What began as a career break to study horticulture at TAFE became a way to explore the joy and play found in natural forms. It was a search for a different way of working, one that wasn’t defined by an overflowing inbox but by a new kind of attention. Working with plants required being present: noticing how the curl of a leaf or a subtle shift in colour communicated a need for light or water. It was a practice where the only data that mattered was what was growing right in front of her.

The name reflects a fascination with the unconventional. Based in Leichhardt, the studio curates specimens with genuine character — distorted trunks, architectural movement, and a presence that defines a room. These are not decorative fillers; they are living things that feel built into the architecture of a home, rather than placed there as an afterthought.

They are a reminder to reconnect with things that are real, tangible, and slow — a way to bring the outside in without overthinking it.
