Queensland Fan Palm + Vintage Willy Guhl Diabolo

Native to the rainforests of far north Queensland, the Queensland Fan Palm opens its leaves into wide, pleated circles, each one fanning out on a long, slender stem. Mature palms of this size are rare and slow to grow, and this one has taken many years to reach its full, layered crown.

It rises from an original Vintage Willy Guhl collector's item. Guhl was a Swiss pioneer of mid-century design, and his Diabolo planter is an icon of mid-century Swiss design. Guhl shaped it in 1951 from a single sheet of fibre cement, and designers and collectors still recognise it today. This one is finished in weathered blue, worn back in places to show the grey beneath, its pinched waist and soft patina carrying decades of character.

This is a piece for a generous space. Place it in a living room, atrium or entry with high ceilings, where the canopy can spread and catch the light from below.

It is happiest in bright, indirect light.
